If you've been thinking about making a move north of the Twin Cities, Princeton, Minnesota deserves a serious look. It's not a suburb. It's not a bedroom community. It's a real town — with a real downtown, a river running through it, and the kind of community feel that's genuinely hard to find within a 60-minute commute of Minneapolis.

Here's what life actually looks like in Princeton, MN.

The Downtown

Princeton's historic downtown along Rum River Drive is one of the best-kept secrets in the region. Locally owned coffee shops, family restaurants, a hardware store that's been there for decades, and the kind of Main Street you drive through and immediately want to live near. The Princeton Mall anchors retail on the south end, and Coborn's keeps grocery runs simple. It's not Maple Grove — and that's exactly the point.

The Rum River

The Rum River defines Princeton life. It runs right through the heart of town, and residents take full advantage — paddling, fishing, and shoreline trails are part of daily life here. Mark Park and Riebe Park are popular gathering spots, and the Rum River State Water Trail draws kayakers and canoeists from across the region. The annual Princeton Rum River Festival is a summer anchor that brings the whole community together.

The Schools

Princeton Public Schools (ISD 477) serves the city and surrounding townships. The district includes North Elementary, South Elementary, Princeton Intermediate, Princeton Middle School, and Princeton High School — Home of the Tigers. ISD 477 is known for strong agriculture, trades, and athletic programs, and the per-pupil costs are competitive compared to southern metro districts. Property taxes reflect that — which is one reason Princeton is so attractive to relocation buyers.

The Housing

Princeton offers a genuinely diverse housing market. In-town options range from historic bungalows and mid-century ramblers to newer construction on the south and west sides of town. Outside city limits, Princeton Township and Baldwin Township open up hobby farms, wooded acreage, and lakefront opportunities on Rush Lake, Green Lake, and Lake Fremont. Price points run from the low-$300,000s for entry-level in-town homes to well above that for riverfront and acreage properties.

The Commute

Princeton sits about 50 miles north of Minneapolis at the intersection of Highways 169 and 95. For many buyers, that distance is the trade-off — and for most of them, it's worth it. The drive to the metro runs about 55–65 minutes depending on traffic and your destination. Many Princeton residents work hybrid schedules and find that two or three days a week in the office is very manageable from here.

The Community

What Princeton has that a lot of suburbs don't is a genuine sense of place. People know their neighbors. Kids play outside. The Princeton Municipal Airport is surprisingly active for a city this size. Mille Lacs Lake — one of the premier walleye fisheries in the country — is 40 minutes north, making weekend fishing trips effortless. There's a pace of life here that's hard to put a price on.

Thinking About Making the Move?

If Princeton sounds like the right fit, I'd love to help you explore it. I've been working in the Princeton and Mille Lacs County market for 25+ years, and I know this community inside and out — the neighborhoods, the school boundaries, the lake lots worth the premium, and the ones that aren't.
